  1. What is “Get it!”? Back to top
“Get it!” is a library service which links database citations to full-text articles (if available) and other related resources available from the University of Ottawa Library Network. When you see the “Get it!” button in an electronic resource, click the button to:
    • View the full-text of the article if the library has a subscription
    • Automatically search the library catalogue to see if the library has the journal or book
    • Access other library services (Ask a Question, ILL, etc)
    • Save and format the citation in RefWorks
  2. Who has access to “Get it!”? Back to top
All University of Ottawa faculty, staff and students can access “Get it!”. The service is available from on campus and from off-campus using the Library’s proxy service.

“Get it!” is a project of the Ontario Scholars Portal developed by the Ontario Council of University Libraries. “Get it!” uses SFX software developed by the Ex Libris Group.

  3. Why can’t I see the “Get it!” button?Back to top
    There are several possibilities:
    • Most, but not all, of the databases to which the library subscribes are “OpenURL enabled”, the technology which allows this linking feature.
    • If the JavaScript function in your browser is disabled, the “Get it!” button will not appear. Simply re-enable JavaScipt to make the button visible.
    • If you are searching Web of Science you must allow the first page to load completely so that the “Get it!” button is visible in your browser.
  4. Why don’t I get full-text for some items? Back to top
    The most likely reasons are:
    • there is no full-text version available, OR
    • the library does not have a license for the full-text for that journal.
Click on the catalogue link in “Get it!” to see whether the library has a print subscription to the requested item.

In rare cases, the recent article may not yet be loaded on publisher’s web site.

  5. Why are there several windows when I use “Get it!”? Back to top
“Get it!” opens up 3 windows for each article: clicking on the button opens a menu screen; selecting a “service” associated with that article opens a second window; and the 3rd window appears for all “Get it!” generated activities (the resource that you choose). Remember to close the windows once your search is completed.
  6. Why is there more than one link for full-text? Back to top
Generally, the library only has one subscription to a journal. However, certain aggregator packages to which we subscribe do not always offer flexibility regarding the content of their packages and occasionally we have duplicates of existing subscriptions. In these cases, we provide links to the alternate full-text sources as well so that if one of the access points becomes inaccessible, you will still have access to the title. Please note that we try not to duplicate resources.
  7. What does item not found mean? Back to top
This means that there has been an error in a field such as title or article year. Unfortunately, if there’s an error in the citation “Get it!” will be unable to retrieve the article. Try searching just the author or title. Should the article still remain unfound it’s possible that the source has changed so verify if “Get it!” listed any other sources. If time permits, request an ILL (interlibrary loan).
  8. Sometimes I only get to the journal or the publisher site instead of the full-text. Why does this happen? Back to top
Unfortunately, it’s not always possible to configure the link to go directly to the full-text article or abstract with a full-text link. Some publishers only allow linking to the journal level rather than the actual article level. Other times, “Get it!” can only take you to the publisher’s site with journal issues’ table of contents; from there you’ll have to navigate to the full-text article.
  9. Why does nothing appear after I’ve clicked on the “Get it!” link button? Back to top
A pop-up disabler will prevent “Get it!” from functioning properly. Simply disable this pop-up feature to enable “Get it!”.
  10. What do I do when I get a "bad URL" or "Error 404", or some other "not found" message? Back to top
This message indicates one of two things:
    • the article is recent and has yet to be loaded on the site which means “Get it!” cannot retrieve it until the publisher places it on its site, or,
    • the “Get it!” links are incorrect and need to be updated.
Please contact us to report the problem.
